The Definition of Sports

Sports, also called athletic sports, are common, recreational activities that people engage in for fun or leisure. They include ice skating, swimming, hiking, basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, golf, softball, cricket, rugby, soccer, cheerleading, track and field, wrestling, basketball, hockey, softball, basketball, track and field and other physical games played on artificial surfaces. Most sports are 토토사이트 normally governed by some set of rules or traditions, which serve primarily to guarantee fair play, and enable consistent adjudication of the outcome. In popular sports, facts of winning and losing are often made public, and in less popular sports, this info can be more discreetly reported or even publicly announced in sports news.

Any activity that demands repeated physical exertion of the body is considered to be a sport. While there have been sports developed for certain fields such as sprinting or weightlifting, most all forms of human endeavour that involve significant exertion of physical faculties are now considered to be sports. The word ‘sport’ actually derives from the Greek word “sport” and has also been used in English to refer to any event in which people compete with each other. So from the early days of human game, sports have been defined by events requiring athletic contest and endeavour. In modern usage, the term sports refers to an athletic contest or sport; however, it has also been used to describe a particular style or form of physical contest or sport.

As defined by Wikipedia, “A sport is a form of outdoor physical activity and hobby where participants use a set of tools, usually organized around a particular sport event, to attempt to achieve an objective.” This definition does not define what the objective is or if the sport itself is considered to be important. The point is that sports are generally regarded as a form of social change. Since sport can be defined as a form of competition, it becomes logical to think that competition would play a role in the social changes that take place when people participate in sports.

One way in which the definition of sport varies across cultures is the extent of physical activity that is required. Most sports require sustained physical effort on the part of participants. For example, while basketball may seem like a simple game, in many parts of the world, basketball is regarded as a competitive event. Soccer, polo and softball are also games that require sustained physical activity. In some cases, sports are viewed as a competition between two teams rather than between individuals.

Another way in which sport is different from other physical activities is its recognition as an athletic activity. Though the majority of Americans enjoy a number of different sports, few of them have become popular spectator sports for the major national events. Most American sports are not even recognized as legitimate athletic activities in many states. This makes sports the only American sport that is not governed by a professional or elite athletic association.

Recognition as a sport also contributes to its profitability. Professional sport franchises such as the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Lakers command enormous salaries and attract enormous canvases. In contrast, football, baseball and basketball have almost no professional or corporate support and lack the widespread commercialization that other sports enjoy. Because of this, the economic value of professional sport is vastly greater than that of the minor league, which has no professional or corporate support and very limited fanbanners. This difference in the profitability of sports and its impact on society has implications for public policy, since revenues and expenditures on athletic activity are important indicators of the health of a country’s economy.
